Nigerian Police Denies Rumors Of Special Anti-Robbery Squad Famed For Human Rights Violations
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has firmly dismissed widespread rumors that the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been reintroduced under a reformed structure. In a statement released on Monday, the Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that SARS has remained disbanded since its official dissolution on October 11, 2020.
Adejobi urged Nigerians to ignore any reports that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been reformed with new rules of engagement, assuring the public that "the SARS is not back in operation."
He urged people to stop disseminating false information and underlined the value of confirming information from reliable sources. Adejobi advised people to follow the Nigeria Police Force's official social media accounts, @PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram, for up-to-date information.
The remark is a reaction to the public's mounting anxiety about allegations that the contentious unit has returned. Following the statewide #EndSARS demonstrations in 2020, which were prompted by popular indignation over the unit's record of constant Human Rights abuse, violence and extrajudicial deaths, SARS was abolished.
