Three men tragically died after their car, directed by Google Maps, drove off an under-construction flyover and fell into the Ramganga River in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district.
The victims, identified as Vivek, Amit, and a third individual whose identity is still being verified, were traveling from Gurugram to attend a wedding in Bareilly on Saturday night.
According to reports, the vehicle, believed to be a rented taxi, was following Google Maps when it mistakenly approached the incomplete flyover. Unaware of the hazard, the driver proceeded onto the structure, causing the car to plunge 50 feet into the shallow river. The accident was discovered the following morning by locals, who notified the authorities. All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims' families have expressed outrage, accusing local authorities of negligence for failing to install proper safety measures at the construction site. They are demanding an investigation and the filing of an FIR against the construction department. A family member questioned, “Why was the bridge left incomplete without proper barricades to warn motorists? This is negligence.”
Police reported that the car suffered significant damage in the crash. The victims' bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and efforts are ongoing to identify the third individual.
A Google spokesperson extended condolences, saying, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We’re working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue.”
This incident has reignited debates over the safety of navigation apps and the role of local authorities in ensuring road safety. While Google Maps is generally regarded as reliable, experts urge users to remain vigilant, particularly in unfamiliar areas.
The accident underscores the risks posed by unfinished infrastructure and insufficient warnings, particularly in rural or construction zones. Local authorities have yet to explain the absence of safety precautions at the incomplete flyover.
As investigations continue, the victims' families are seeking justice and accountability. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper road safety measures and the enforcement of construction regulations to prevent future incidents.
