ABOUT THE BOOK
This book is a comprehensive introduction to social media law, meticulously
structured into eight chapters that delve into the complexities of legal issues
in the social media landscape. The opening chapter provides a thorough
historical overview of social media, tracing its evolution from Web 1.0 to Web
2.0 and the emergence of iconic platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
Chapter two defines social media law, examining early scholarly efforts and
employing both lexical and innovative approaches to conceptualization. It also
explores communication tools such as emoticons, emojis, GIFs, and ASCII art. Chapter
three focuses on social media governance, particularly from a Nigerian
perspective. It outlines the legal and institutional framework regulating
social media in Nigeria. Chapter four addresses the registration of social
media platforms, covering topics such as web domain name registration, the
frameworks of NiRA and ICANN, social media trademarks, patent registration, and
remedies. In Chapter five, the book discusses the laws governing social media
content and interactions. Chapter six broadens the discussion to encompass
social media data protection. Chapter seven provides illuminating insights into
digital rights on social media, while Chapter eight is dedicated to social
media advertising. This final chapter examines ad formats on social media
platforms, the broader landscape of digital advertising, and the challenges
encountered in ad delivery. While this book is rooted in the Nigerian context,
it also addresses global issues pertinent to social media law. It serves as an
essential guide for social media law practitioners, influencers, social media
users, and stakeholders, offering valuable insights into the legalities of the
social media space.
